Aerosols - January 2011

The UK uses approximately 600 million aerosols domestically each year. As householders we might not think that we throw many aerosol cans away but there are hairspray cans, oils, foams and paints in most houses. Kirklees residents can now recycle these for the first time using their green wheelie bins and they will join the food and drinks cans at the recycling plant and be recycled into new metal containers.

Residents wanting to recycle aerosols are asked to ensure that the aerosol can is completely empty, to detach the lid and to not pierce, crush or flatten the aerosol cans before placing in the green bins.

No Video Tapes Please - January 2011

Recently problems have been experienced at our Materials Recycling Facility with video tapes being put in green bins. The tape has caused major problems with getting caught up in the sorting machinery and has meant that the whole plant has had to be temporarily shut down on several occasions to remove the tape from the machines. If you have old video tapes these should be disposed of in your grey bins as they cannot be recycled and won't cause any problems at our energy from waste plant.
