Waste Minimisation Ideas

  • Buy things like washing up liquid in large bottles. Buying in bulk usually saves on packaging and can save money.
  • Buy fruit and vegetables loose. Not only do you save money this way but you can actually see what you are buying.
  • Buy products from recycled material such as toilet roll made from recycled paper products.
  • Use your local library for books, DVDs and music. For more information see the library information page on the Council's main website.
  • Hire DVD's from your local DVD Hire shop instead of buying them.
  • Use re-useable cloth nappies instead of disposables. For further information visit the Change Project website.
  • Buy wrapping paper in rolls rather than in single sheets. Buying single sheets could mean using more paper than you need or have waste that cannot be used.
  • Pass unwanted toys, books and clothes to neighbours, nurseries or local charities. Furniture in good condition can be collected by the Kirklees Community Recycling Group - Tel 0845 634 1360
  • Home compost your vegetable peelings and garden prunings. For further information see our composting page.
  • Why buy bottled water when chilled tap water may do just as well?
  • Use re-useable items instead of disposable products such as tissues, face-wipes, razors, paper and plastic cups, plates and cutlery.
  • Consider using boxes with lids instead of using cling film and aluminium foil to wrap food.
  • When shopping, consider using a re-useable carrier bag or take your own.
