Please remember to rinse your plastic bottles and cans and place all items loosely in your green bin or green liner if you do not have wheeled bins (not in any other bags)

Items such as large cardboard boxes which will not fit in your green liner may be presented for collection in a manageable bundle.

The items above should not be placed in your green bag because they currently cannot be dealt with at the recycling plant.

What happens to green bin materials?

  • The green bin material is taken to our Materials Recycling Facility in Huddersfield where it is tipped onto a clean floor.
  • The material is then loaded onto a conveyor belt where large items are removed for recycling to avoid later blockages.
  • Material moves into a large rotating drum. As this rotates cans and plastic bottles fall through the holes in the sides of the drum.
  • The cans and plastics move onto a conveyor where plastics are handpicked for baling. An overhead magnet removes the steel cans and an eddy current separator sorts the aluminium cans. These are also baled ready for recycling.
  • Meanwhile, the remaining material is passed onto another conveyor where workers pick off the cardboard for recycling and take off the non-recyclable materials leaving just the paper. Finally the paper is baled for recycling.
