Why should I recycle?
Recycling helps to conserve energy, cuts down on pollution and reduces the need for virgin materials. Also by using the recycling schemes in Kirklees you will help reduce the amount of rubbish being sent to landfill.

What happens to the green bin materials after they are collected?
The green bin materials go to our central sorting site in Huddersfield where they are sorted into material type by mechanical and manual means. Once these have been sorted they are baled ready for transportation to reprocessors where they are recycled into new products. For more information see our green bin scheme page.

Why can I only recycle some types of plastics and not others?
There are several different types of plastic materials and each of these materials has slightly different properties and is recycled in different ways. Currently there is only an established market locally for the type of plastic that makes plastic bottles (type 1 PET and type 2 HDPE). By asking residents for plastic bottles only we are making sure that the other types of plastic are not collected unnecessarily. Remember this includes bottles from the bathroom and kitchen too.

Can I have an extra green bin?
Yes - the Council will provide you with additional green bins at no extra cost. Click here to place an order online or call 01484 414700

What happens if I forget to put my bin out for collection?
If you forget to put your bin out for collection you will have to wait for the next collection date. Alternatively take your excess material to a Household Waste Recycling Centre. Each material will have to be placed into the separate containers on site.

Your Questions AnsweredCan I recycle furniture/ bulky items/ electrical goods?
Electrical items can be recycled at your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC). Each site has a separate area for electrical items and also containers for domestic household batteries and car batteries. If you are unsure where these are on site, please ask a member of the site staff to help you. Kirklees householders can also have large electrical items collected for recycling. Click here to request a collection.

Furniture can be donated to local charities, such as Pass It On. Any furniture in good condition welcomed for people in need. The Centre will arrange for collection free of charge. The donation hotline is 08456 341 360 open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Unfortunately other bulky items cannot be recycled. Click here to request a bulky item collection or call 01484 414700
